Scholarships

The Fall 2020 scholarship application is now open. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years for freshmen and three years for transfer students, provided they maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) at KU. 

All eligible applicants will receive an email with scholarship application instructions.

Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be admitted to KU as a new student
  • Be seeking a degree at KU
  • Meet the GPA requirements for the scholarship

All admitted freshmen with a 3.25 or higher GPA receive the KU International Achievement Award scholarship for $3,000 without submitting a scholarship application.

Students may also apply for additional scholarships below. Scholarships from KU International Admissions may not be combined. Students are only awarded the highest scholarship that they receive. 

There is not a GPA or test score threshold that will guarantee that applicants receive the scholarships below. The scholarship application process is competitive, and each application is reviewed on the strength of all the materials submitted. 

Scholarship for Freshmen with 3.5 GPA or Above

KU International Excellence Award

A full tuition waiver valued at $25,000+. The KU International Excellence Award is available for freshmen students who begin studies in the fall term. To be considered, you must have a 3.5 GPA and provide the following by February 1:

  • Official SAT or ACT scores
  • Official proof of English proficiency
  • Resume or CV describing all your extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and awards
  • A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
    • Your personal and academic goals and how you hope to achieve them at KU
    • Choose three activities from your resume/CV and explain how they have helped you develop leadership skills
    • The ways you intend to use what you learn at KU when you return to your home country
    • A topic of your choice
  • Three letters of recommendation

Students that apply for the KU International Excellence Award and do not receive it will be automatically considered for the KU International Merit Award & KU International Distinction Award below.

Scholarships for Freshmen with 3.25 GPA or Above

KU International Merit Award & KU International Distinction Award

An award of $9,000 or $6,000. These scholarships are available for freshmen who begin their studies in the spring, summer, or fall terms. Students fill out one application to apply for both scholarships.

The application deadline for these scholarships is May 1 for the summer or fall and November 1 for spring. To be considered, you must have a 3.25 GPA or higher and provide the following:

  • Resume or CV describing all your extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and awards
  • A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
    • Your personal and academic goals and how you hope to achieve them at KU
    • Choose three activities from your resume/CV and explain how they have helped you develop leadership skills
    • The ways you intend to use what you learn at KU when you return to your home country
    • A topic of your choice
  • One letter of recommendation

Scholarships for Transfer Students

KU International Excellence Award

Students that apply for the KU International Excellence Award and do not receive it will be automatically considered for the KU International Transfer Scholarship below.

KU International Transfer Scholarship

An award of $3,000-7,000 for transfer students who begin studies at KU in the spring, summer, or fall terms. The application deadline for this scholarship is February 1 for the summer or fall and November 1 for spring. To be considered, you must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and provide the following: 

  • Official proof of English proficiency
  • Resume or CV describing all your extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and awards
  • A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
    • Your personal and academic goals and how you hope to achieve them at KU
    • Choose three activities from your resume/CV and explain how they have helped you develop leadership skills
    • The ways you intend to use what you learn at KU when you return to your home country
    • A topic of your choice
  • One letter of recommendation

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

An award of approximately $11,000 for PTK members transferring from a U.S. community college with 24 transferrable credit hours, the last 12 of which must have been earned at a U.S. community college. The application deadline for this scholarship is May 1 for the summer or fall and November 1 for spring. To be considered, you must have a 3.25 GPA or higher and provide official transcripts from each post-secondary school you have attended.

Leo S. Rowe Pan American Loan Fund

The Leo S.Rowe Pan American Fund is an educational loan program of the Organization of American States (OAS) to assist citizens from Latin America and Caribbean OAS member states finance their studies or research in accredited universities across the U.S. with interest-free loans up to $15,000.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be a citizen of a Latin American or Caribbean Member State of OAS
  • Be in F-1 or J-1 student visa status
  • Be able to successfully complete the studies or research for the loan requested within 2 years
  • Be enrolled full-time
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
