KU Pre-Academic Summer Program

Make progress on your required English, refine your academic English, or prepare for academic courses and learn about KU.

Summer courses for international students

KU offers two options for international students who want to make progress on their degrees during the summer — including students admitted for the fall semester who want to get an early start on their coursework.

Introduction to KU, the U.S., and Lawrence

This three-credit course helps international students transition to life at KU and in Lawrence by introducing them to our community’s day-to-day rhythms and resources. If you take this course during the summer, you will be better equipped to navigate life in the U.S. when the fall semester begins. This course also counts toward international students’ in-person course requirements.

Applied English Center courses

If you plan to take English courses through the Applied English Center (AEC) to improve your conversation skills, pronunciation, grammar, or academic English, those are also available during the summer. Taking a summer AEC course will allow you to get any language requirements out of the way so you can focus on your primary coursework in the fall. These summer courses also count toward international students’ in-person course requirements.
