Scholarships

KU offers a range of scholarships for international undergraduate first year and transfer students. All scholarships are renewable each year and range from $3,000/year to a full tuition waiver valued at $100,000+ ($25,000+/year).

Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be admitted to KU as a new student (must apply to be admitted)
  • Be seeking a degree at KU
  • Meet the GPA requirements for the scholarship

All admitted first year students with a 3.25 or higher GPA receive a $3,000-$9,000 per year renewable scholarship.

Students may also apply for additional scholarships below. Scholarships from KU International Admissions may not be combined. Students are only awarded the highest scholarship that they receive, but they may be able to receive additional scholarships from their academic unit at KU.

*Students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and enroll in a minimum of 30 credits at KU to renew the scholarship each year.

KU International Excellence Award

A full tuition waiver valued at $100,000+ ($25,000+/year). The KU International Excellence Award is available for first year students who begin studies in the fall term.

To be considered, you must have a 3.5 GPA and provide the following by February 1:

  • Official SAT or ACT scores (optional)
  • Official proof of English proficiency
  • Resume or CV describing all your extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and awards
  • Choose three activities from your resume/CV and explain how they have been meaningful to you
  • A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
    • Your personal and academic goals and how you hope to achieve them at KU
    • Your field of study and specialized interests within it;
    • The ways you intend to use what you learn at KU when you return to your home country
    • A topic of your choice (you may submit an essay you used for another application)
  • Two letters of recommendation

There is not a GPA or test score threshold that will guarantee that applicants receive the scholarships below. The International Excellence Award application process is competitive and the scholarship is awarded based on the strength of each application to a limited number of students. Students must also be in F or J visa status to be considered. The application will be available in November. Eligible admitted students will receive an email with instructions on how to apply.

Transfer - KU International Excellence Award

A full tuition waiver valued at $75,000+ ($25,000+/year). The KU International Excellence Award is available for transfer students who begin studies in the fall term

To be considered, you must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and provide the following by February 1:

  • Official proof of English proficiency
  • Resume or CV describing all your extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and awards
  • Choose three activities from your resume/CV and explain how they have been meaningful to you
  • A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
    • Your personal and academic goals and how you hope to achieve them at KU
    • Your field of study and specialized interests within it

KU International Transfer Scholarship

An award of $3,000-7,000 for transfer students who begin studies at KU in the spring, summer, or fall terms. The application deadline for this scholarship is February 1.

To be considered, you must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and provide the following: 

  • Official proof of English proficiency
  • Resume or CV describing all your extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and awards
  • A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
    • Your personal and academic goals and how you hope to achieve them at KU
    • Your field of study and specialized interests within it
    • The ways you intend to use what you learn at KU when you return to your home country
    • A topic of your choice (you may submit an essay you used for another application)
  • One letter of recommendation

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

An award of approximately $35,466 ($11,822/year) for PTK members transferring from a U.S. community college with 24 transferrable credit hours, the last 12 of which must have been earned at a U.S. community college.

This scholarship can be combined with scholarships with the other transfer scholarships above.

Leo S. Rowe Pan American Loan Fund

The Leo S.Rowe Pan American Fund is an educational loan program of the Organization of American States (OAS) to assist citizens from Latin America and Caribbean OAS member states finance their studies or research in accredited universities across the U.S. with interest-free loans up to $15,000.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be a citizen of a Latin American or Caribbean Member State of OAS
  • Be in F-1 or J-1 student visa status
  • Be able to successfully complete the studies or research for the loan requested within 2 years
  • Be enrolled full-time
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
